SM Replay: George Michael, "Monkey"
Remember when George Michael was still fanciable?
Admittedly, we have to go waaay back. To 1988, as it happens, and the fifth single from the 'Faith' album.
It's easy to forget that George released some really excellent solo stuff early on. Everyone remembers 'Faith', of course. If you're like me, you'll probably remember being embarrassed listening to 'I Want Your Sex' in front of your mum. But for some reason, everyone forgets about the utter greatness of 'Monkey'.
So, let me ask *you* the question. Why can't you do it? Why can't you set your monkey free?
The song is conspicuously absent from both of George's Greatest Hits compilations. What's worse is that the single version was a great big stonking remix and if you want it on a CD, you better be prepared to pay around £30 for it on eBay.
I'm not sure what I like most about the video. It might be the gratuitous ass shaking. Or the hypnotic hip swaying. Maybe it's the unintentionally hilarious
wanking dance routine. Or maybe it's the blatant (but still hot) display of braces-wearing?

Uhm...
You're right: "Monkey" isn't on either one of George Michael's compilation CD's, nor is the single version of "I Want Your Sex."
I always liked George's hat in the "Monkey" video. I had a similar one, and when I wore it in my bedroom while lipsynching in front of the mirror, it always made me feel like Jason Donovan--even though I didn't really understand who Jason Donovan was.
Sunday night I put on an old Wham! VHS tape and watched their videos from "Wham Rap" through "Everything She Wants" while I ironed. It was great fun! Why isn't the single version of "Wham Rap" on any of the Wham! compilation CDs? It's a conspiracy!
NewPlanet, what's up? Okay, so I've solved the George Michael "Monkey" mystery. Remember, I was trying to look for the version that I remembered hearing on the radio but couldn't find anywhere? Yeah, the answer is much more interesting than I expected, and it involves Columbia Records SUCKING. Check it out!
